The April 2024 Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and CIRT Government Affairs dinner focused on safety in the construction and related industries, featuring guest speaker Todd Inman, National Transportation Safety Board member.
Washington D.C. --
The first-ever joint meeting of the CLC and the CIRT Government Affairs Committee met at the historic Willard Hotel bringing together industry CEOs and government affairs representatives with a Q&A from Todd Inman, former Chief of Staff, state Cabinet Secretary and now Member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Todd Inman highlighted the role of the NTSB and how its investigations and reports guide future policies, safety, design, and engineering within the infrastructure and transportation industries. He also reflected on his time in Florida and at the US Department of Transportation. Emblematic of his commitment to future improvements, Todd Inman joined us earlier for a special visit to the CIRT National Competition student presentations to congratulate the teams by sharing a challenge coin with the presenters for their exemplary work on industry-specific design challenges – the future of the industry.
Additionally, CIRT President and CLC Founder Mark Casso delivered remarks about the “All of Government” approach of the Biden Administration, and specifically talked about how the US Department of Labor had promulgated rules impacting employees at all levels of seniority from most junior to most senior and the potential ramifications for member companies.
Michael Altman, a member of the ABC Regulatory team, outlined ABC’s three-pronged approach to advancing legislative priorities for ABC members’ firms and their employees. Specifically, he talked about ABC-led litigation, regulatory battles, and legislative initiatives.
In closing, Jack Kalavritinos recapped the mission of the CLC group, sharing accomplishments from the past year including hearing directly from Rep. Lloyd Smucker on his workforce legislation and committing to `build support in the House, co-signing multiple ABC-led initiatives, five meetings with top-tier speakers in 2023, a mini-conference in February, a congressional reception (together with two other groups), and an op-ed on construction safety focused on CTE an hard hats.
Lastly he looked ahead and highlighted a set of planned and proposed CLC initiatives such as:
3 Op-eds between May and November
Focus on amplifying Smucker legislation (video roundtables, media relations, targeted GA)
Public opinion Survey
The CLC thanks CIRT and in particular Mark Casso for his warm hospitality and graciously including CLC members at his CIRT reception in addition to hosting the meeting and dinner.
